The Highway Patrol was created in 1937 to enforce traffic and other state laws relating to the operation of vehicles on state highways. The Patrol's scope of responsibility also includes (1) policing the Kansas Turnpike, (2) providing security for public officials, (3) administering the Capitol Police, (4) inspecting commercial motor carriers, and (5) administering the Homeland Security Grant Program. Sworn members of the Highway Patrol are vested with full police powers.
