The Historical Society was chartered as a nonprofit organization in 1875. In 1879, it became the official trustee for the state historical collections. The Society has since functioned as a state agency with a membership organization as support. The Executive Director is elected by the Society's Board of Directors and appointed by the Governor. The Society's mission is to actively preserve and share Kansas history by collecting, preserving, and interpreting materials and information pertaining to state government and history for the purpose of enhancing government transparency, providing economic development assistance, and educating the students and families of Kansas.
